Rheingauer Weinmarkt (Wine Festival) in Frankfurt am Main
Categories: Dining
At the Rheingau Weinmarkt, a street festival in Frankfurt (Frankfurt vacation rentals | Frankfurt travel guide) am Main, it is all about culinary delights. In the Freßgass
, a lovely district in the city center filled with charming restaurants, hip bars, rustic taverns and exquisite delicatessen stores, once a year Rheingau vintners present their specialty wines. In 2009 the festival takes place from the 2nd until the 11th of September and once again will attract thousands of national and international visitors.
The small area in the pedestrian zone in Frankfurt’s city center has room for 30 stands where you can taste and buy more than 600 excellent wines and sparkling wines presented by vintners from the Rheingau area. The most dominant wine at the festival is the famous Rheingau Riesling, but there is also a huge variety of less known wines on offer, such as light and zesty summer wines or wines from alternative grape varieties.
Additionally the visitors can choose from a great selection of food, ranging from traditionally German meaty snacks to healthy Asian specialties, and not to forget the typical Rheingau Flammkuchen
, a delicious German pizza
made from a very thin layer of pastry topped with sour cream, chopped onions and bacon.
The Rheingauer Weinmarkt has been held every summer since 1978 and has not changed since its beginnnings. The festival is only for food and wine aficionados and completely abstains from any additional entertainment.
