Nowadays Marktredwitz (Marktredwitz vacation rentals | Marktredwitz travel guide) is a lively town with around 19.000 inhabitants. Situated next to the Fichtelgebirge
and the Steinwald
and at an altitude of 480 to 660 meters, Marktredwitz is also the ideal starting point for all kind of excursions throughout the year. In the old heart of the town visitors will find plenty of shopping opportunities, Cafes and Restaurants where local traditional dishes and international food are on offer. We start at the market, the birth place of this town and see the historic City Hall dating back to the 14th century with a beautiful Renaissance Jutty from 1592. Behind the St.-Bartholomäus-Church (14th - 16th century) we discover Lug ins Land
which can be translated as look at the land
. This is the oldest building of Marktredwitz in form of a tower, dating back to the 13th century and is the rest of the ancient castle. Near by we discover another architectonical treasure, the St.-Theresien-Church, (Rococo, 1776/1767) which was founded by Empress Maria Theresia for the stationed Austrian Garrison at that time. Now we turn right and walk through the market passing beautiful houses from the late Baroque area and partly replaced after huge fires in the years 1822 and 1836 by Neo-Classical and Biedermeier style fronts.
Continuing our stroll along the Hirschmannstrasse
we will see the new City Hall which was build in 1794 for residential purpose. It was that house where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe staid as a gust when he visited Marktredwitz from the 13th to the 18th of August 1822. Take the chance and visit the Goethezimmer
where a collection of paintings and items are on display to remind every visitor of the good old times.
Many more sights are waiting to be explored and you might want to take a break at the Goldene Löwe
(golden lion) the oldest tavern in town before continuing your stroll through the streets of Marktredwitz.
If you don't like to take that trip on your own you can join the official guided tour including an ascent of the tower. Those tours are organized between May and October each year and start every Saturday morning at 10:00 am. Meeting point is the Tourist Information office.

came down, I was one of those in Berlin posing on the rests of it for the camera. Off course I took the first opportunity to rediscover the new
but old states of Germany and finally understood the impact the wall had on all Germans and in regards to the worst part in German history. Being a German
living abroad, I discovered in years what I value most about Germany. Rest assured it is a country of rich cultural background still alive today. I visit my home country regularly and stay in touch with my friends, even those back from school. Another thing I always felt passionate about is writing and sharing my experience and thoughts. The internet provides us all with a great opportunity to connect, tell stories, read and learn from others and grow as a global community.
