The Stillachtal
The Stillachtal

[ source: Wikipedia]

A fun bicycle trip through the Stillachtal: Take some time to observe this beautiful chapel. Look at the frescoes that are dated back to the 1700s in the Appachkapelle. The Marienkapelle showcases the most beautiful rococo altar in the upper Allgäu as well as other beautiful art.

Here are some suggestions for a fun bicycle tour through the Stillachtal:

  • Ride south from the marketplace in Oberstdorf (Oberstdorf vacation rentals | Oberstdorf travel guide) via the Prinzenstrasse to the Loretto chapels (about 1 km away from the market place.)
  • The Josefkapelle has many baroque art pieces for viewing.
  • After the chapels, we take a left at the Scheibenhaus into the Apfelbaumallee. After about 800 meters, we cross the street to Spielmannsau and get to the end of the alley to the Zimmeroybridge. Take a left upwards along the Stillach river. We look into the valley to see one of the largest Ski Jumps in the world, the Heini Klopfer Ski Jump.
  • At the Gschlief by the Lawinengalerie (Avalanche Gallery), we get back to the street but use the bicyle way on the right along the street that passes the gallery.
  • We continue along Dammweg along the Stillach river which merges shortly before the parking space Faistenoy into the main street. We stay on this street and follow it down into the valley until we get to the bus station Birgsau. Here we enter on the left into the hotel and restaurant Birgsau. You can have a meal here, enjoy the surroundings and drive back on the old Birgsauer Strasse. After passing the Cafe Anatsstein we get back on the street to Oberstdorf at Anatswald.
  • If you want to get back directly to Oberstdorf, keep going on this street. If you want to continue your tour to Schwand, cross the small bridge over the Stillach river. Take a right after the brigde and immediatly a left where the street will lead you to the Fellhornbahn and then to Schwand.
  • From here you can take a short trip to the Ski Jump or the beautifully located Freibergsee (Freiberg Lake.)
  • On our way back, we use the same route all the way to Schwand, take a left and drive over the Schwandsteige to the bottom of the Ski Jump. Along the alley you will find your way back to the Zimmeroybruecke (bridge). Take a left after the bridge along the Dammweg right next to the Stillach river. Before we get to the Stillachbruecke (bridge), we leave Dammweg and get back to Oberstdorf via Meyersoygasse.
    • There are various routes that you can venture on. For more information call one of the below bike rental places (they provide you with maps too.):
